Turtle hatchery
A few kilometres from La Maison Nil Manel on a long sandy beach some biodiversity conservationists have opened a hatchery to protect vulnerable species of sea turtles in Sri Lanka. Several species are particularly threatened with extinction and to encourage the villagers to save the eggs, the farm offers to buy them for a few rupees.
Eggs are incubated for a few weeks before hatching. The baby turtles are raised for three days in tanks before being returned to the ocean (under the greedy eye of predators no doubt!).
