Sinharaja Forest
Hikers and nature lovers rejoice! We recommend this tour to Sinharaja Forest (the word means lion king in Sri Lankan), a lush, tropical highland rainforest and Unesco World Heritage site.
This forest was the last refuge of this Sri Lankan feline. These days you can hike for 3 to 5 hours with a local guide on a quest to see lizards, butterflies, birds and even medicinal plants endemic to the region.
The tour begins with an early morning departure from La Maison Nil Manel (3 hours each way). The road to Ratnapura is fringed with rice fields and tea plantations. This is also where palm sap and Kitul syrup is collected by villagers living on the fringes of the forest.
